About Hvar
The city dating to the late 13th century had the characteristics of Romanesque Gothic architecture. Within the protected core of the town, in a series of narrow stone houses and streets, mostly in the rocky hills, stands out the Gothic house Petra Hektorović, then the so-called Hektorović Palace. Outside the town center is the mansion of the poet Hannibal Lucic from the 16th c. The city is also famous by its arsenal, one of the best preserved in the Mediterranean. It was built in the mid 16th century. In this way Arsenal was more than a naval facility and became a significant architectural and urban landmark of Hvar.
What attracts tourists to Hvar is the fact that the Europe's oldest public theater is located in the town of Hvar. The theater was founded in 1612 and is thus the first public theater for use by all citizens. In this way, Hvar's theater is inscribed in the history of European theater. With its present-day baroque interior design, Hvar's theater is one of the ten best-preserved baroque theaters in Europe.
The town of Hvar is reachable by ferry directly to the port of Hvar, or by road from the central part of the island. A special part of Hvar's tourist offer is staying in pristine coves close to the city, which can be visited by car, bike or inspirational walks through the Mediterranean landscape.
